Richard was the very first All Around gymnast to represent the Maverick Club in 1963, when he won the gold medal in All Around. Richard was a former Boy of the Year in 1965, and won Best All Around Camper when his squad won the Champion Camper Squad in 19??. Richard went on to win a gymnastics scholarship at Odessa Jr. College where he was a Junior College All American gymnast in Trampoline (1968) and Vaulting (1969). Richard then attended the University of Arizona on a full scholarship as an All Around gymnast. He competed for the U of A for two years before moving to California to begin his coaching career. From his very first day in Tucson, Arizona as a student-athlete at the U of A, he was given the nickname "Tex" which stuck immediately and has followed his ever since. "Tex" Womack began his professional gymnastics coaching career in Pasadena, California with the Flairs Gymnastics Club, then on to San Diego, CA with the San Diego YMCA, and the San Diego Aztecs gymnastics club, while attending San Diego State University and receiving his BA degree in PE and Health Sciences. After a brief stint as the assistant coach at LSU, then in San Antonio, TX Richard returned for a short time to Amarillo and coached for the Amarillo School of Gymnastics (which later became the Maverick Club gymnastics club). Richard "Tex" Womack then headed north to Denver, Colorado to begin his graduate work at the University of Denver where he coached the age-group program while attending school. Richard received his M.S. degree in Physical Education and Sports Sciences in 1982. In 1964 he opened his own gymnastics school, American Gymnastics, and had many State and Regional gymnastics champions in all events including vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. Richard closed American in 2005 and accepted the Head Coach position at ArtSports of Colorado Springs. Richard has just finished his full 2nd year there as the Head Coach of a T&T Gymnastics program (Tumbling and Trampoline) which has brought him back to his roots that started at the Maverick Club in 1956. From starting the tumbling class with Mr. Dykeman as a 6 year old in 1956 to today as a 56 year old, Richard "Tex" Womack now has been involved in gymnastics for 50 Years. Richard is also an avid skier where he is a ski patroller at Loveland Ski Area on I-70 west of Denver. Richard says," Come on up and ski with me anytime!"
